It’s overly cute for my taste, but this New York Times article on recent buildings in the city has a lot to recommend it. Most importantly, while New York is and probably always will be a vertical city, some of the most notable new buildings are low-rise.
My personal theory – I have no proof, but I like the idea – is that because New York is a vertical city, one can show how rich and powerful one is by building low. For example, J. P. Morgan apparently didn’t feel the need for rental income or for impressive height when he had his bank’s headquarters built in 1913.
