Relative Time

I was fooling around with the OldNYC index to the NYPL Digital Collections when I stumbled over the attached photos and caption. The intersection of Kissena Boulevard and Sanford Avenue is right in the heart of downtown Flushing, and a place I must have walked by 8 or 9000 times in the seventeen years I lived there. I am just barely old enough to remember the demolition of the convent, which made a big impression on me because something (An elevator shaft? A stair tower?) remained standing for a while after the rest of the building had been torn down. It was replaced by a Korvettes, which of course is also long gone.

The original building was about 130 years old when it was torn down, but that’s already something like 45 years ago. The new Korvettes building is more than 40 years old.
