Lack Of Ornament Is Crime

The brown building in the center is an apartment hotel from around 1890; the tall building just beyond it is a hotel from circa 1930; the building on the left is an apartment house from circa 1960.

Putting aside the stupidity of using white brick in New York, where it will inevitable look dingy as it gets stained by pollution and weathering, the newest building looks like a cartoon. The Victorian styling of the older building and the vaguely art-deco ornaments on the middle building may not be to everyone’s taste, but they at least suggest that someone gave some thought to the buildings’ appearances. Unless the “PARK” sign for the garage counts as ornament, the newest building is devoid of anything that might suggest aesthetic taste. It might not look so bad if it wasn’t right next to a better-looking building.
