That’s a cast-iron connection from 1882. The round column at the top is part of the street facade, transitioning to a square cross-section below grade. Except for the fact that the iron-worker put in the splice bolts upside down (nut on top), the connection looks perfect. It’s 136 years old and, from its appearance, it could have been built yesterday.
