I was up in the tower of a early-19C church last week. No lights and the part of the tower where I had the most to see had no windows. So a lot of my photos are flashlight-lit. (Click on the picture to expand it and see it more clearly.)
It is, of course, possible that the graffito above was written last year by someone who felt the need to fake the date, but I doubt it. I’ve seen too many similar names and dates in too many church attics and towers to doubt their general authenticity. It’s been 132 years since H.L. was up there. I’m not sure if J.M. was there at the same time or just wrote his initials nearby.
Of course, I made sure not to smudge the chalk.
