The best form of recycling is adaptive reuse. A client had some 1950s tanker chairs that were going to be disposed of during interior demolition, and kindly let us take some for use in our office. They match our decor – the vast majority of desks and tables in our office are 1940s-50s steel tanker-style – and will serve as guest chairs next to people’s desks.
As with any reuse, there were costs. In this case, renting a minivan to move the chairs from Queens to Manhattan had both a monetary cost (small) and an environmental cost (small) that were outweighed by keeping these chairs in use for an indefinite time longer.
