That’s an original column that supports one end of a large roof truss and one bay of mezzanine floor above. It’s a big built-up box, riveted together from plates and angles. It was covered by masonry fireproofing in the building’s original incarnation, and is now protected by intumescent paint that allows the steel to be seen.

I don’t get to design things like this all that often, so I usually see them (as here) in other people’s work, but there’s something very satisfying in such a heavy and competent piece of structure.
