The army wasn’t just flying planes around Manhattan, of course. In the fall of 1939, someone in a plane took a shot of the Brooklyn Army Terminal, described in the caption as the “New York Port of Embarkation” which is an accurate name if your view of the world was army-based. The two main warehouse buildings, just inland of the piers, were designed by Cass Gilbert (architect of the Woolworth Building) and completed just a bit too late to be used during World War I. They are very, very big. You can get a sense of that by comparing them to the ordinary buildings further inland; also by the fact that they are four blocks long.
