Failure Portrait: Everything

I knew before I entered this building that we would be designing a lot of repair. It turned out to be a lot of a lot.

The joists are all rotted, the wall extension that’s supporting the joist nearest us is on the verge of collapse, the wall beyond is missing mortar to the point that bricks can be removed by hand*, and yes that’s sunlight coming through were the roof should be. We got involved with this building after a portion of wall collapsed during Hurricane Sandy; once we got inside I was amazed that the whole thing hadn’t come down.

*My response whenever someone says “I can take the bricks out by hand” is “Don’t do that.”
