Obscuring The Name

If the name of your congregation is the Marble Collegiate Church, you want to show off the marble. Circa 1901, most of it was covered with ivy, which both obscures the meaning of the name and, in the long run, damages the stone. The ivy has since been removed.

The tall building behind the church is the Holland House, a fashionable hotel of the era. It’s one of the residential-occupancy buildings in The Structures of Skyscrapers.
