The Speed Of Wear

Obviously, the sign in the photo was installed on the platform at the Brooklyn Bridge station on the IRT Lexington Avenue line a little over two years ago. I doubt it will be legible much longer.

If it wasn’t obvious it was related to Covid, it would be suspicious. At no other time since the first elevated train in Manhattan in 1868, since the first subway in 1904, since the first city-owned subway in 1932, has anyone in a position of control shown the slightest interest in having passengers keep their distance.
