In Amerika, Franz Kafka’s least-read novel, the protagonist emigrates from central Europe to the US. As his ship sails through the harbor into New York, he sees “the Statue of Liberty, which he had been observing for some time, as if in a sudden burst of sunlight. The arm with the sword now reached aloft, and about her figure blew the free winds.”
Whether you believe Kafka made a mistake or was deliberately making a point about the unreal qualities of emigration, it’s a memorable image. As for the comic-book version, the base, the overall pose, and the presence of a book are all mostly right.
