The End, For Now

Once again, a photo of the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Sava. This is looking north, from the nave into the apse. We’ve reached completion of the structural work: the new sanctuary floor is done, and now the new roof structure is complete. The apse roof, which is in part a five-sided half-cone, is in place and was the last remaining new structure of the current work. The accompanying architectural work – most importably, putting the temporary roofing over the roof deck – is ongoing, but the new structure is all in.

The contrast of the new structure with the original walls is, I think, what really jumps out from this picture. But the more important contrast is the picture above with the one below, taken from a similar angle when we had just started work, about a year after the fire.

The completion of this phase of work, obviously, is not the end overall. The end we’re just reaching is a structurally stable building that is enclosed against the weather. It is not a complete building and another phase of build-out will be required to reach that goal. But this is still a big deal.
